Earlier this week, we gave you a heads up on all the asbestos brouhaha coming out of Cobble Hill’s PS 29. Parents are up in arms over the asbestos abatement which will be taking place while school is in session. Now, the community is coming together to try and change the way the DOE and School Construction Authority handle dangerous work in all city schools. Come hear more about it tonight at the PICKET FOR SAFER N.Y.C SCHOOLS, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the PS 29 schoolyard (entrance on Kane St. between Henry and Clinton). Here’s what the flyer says:

A mighty effort is going on in Brooklyn, where a group of parents and neighborhood activists are trying to change construction policy for all NYC schools, aiming for a guarantee that all dust-producing, asbestos-removing, lead-exposing work is done during the summer! NOT WHILE SCHOOL IS IN SESSION.
As it stands now, the DOE and the SCA are using their power to plow over parental concern, mask any sort of transparency and are questionably granted immunity to certain Codes and Regulations based on their needs at any given juncture.Let them know that discarding parental concerns, ignoring standard codes and dismissing common sense is an absolute abuse of power.

Might be a good idea to stop in–whether you agree or not, want more facts or just would like to get involved.
